y2katalogue: The Tapes

Tape #63: Behind Those Purple Eyes.

It’s finally the last period of the day, which meant it was time for vocal class. Milo walked down the hall towards the music room; his eyes glued onto his Sidekick as he typed on the tiny keyboard.

Jennifer: Yo, Milo!

Milo looked up and turned around, noticing he passed the music room where vocal was being held in. He immediately power walked to the correct classroom right before the late bell rang.

The teens enter the classroom, ultimately sitting together in the back of the room. The vocal teacher, Mr. Villanova, comes into the room with a huge smile on his face.

Mr. Villanova: Good morning, sophomores! Happy first day back from the summer break! We have a very exciting year ahead of us and I’m excited to teach you all of the music I have planned for you.

Milo smiles, as he always appreciated Mr. Villanova’s enthusiasm for teaching. Jennifer on the other hand already looked bored.

Mr. Villanova: One thing that makes your sophomore year different than your freshman year is not only are all the awkward introductions are not needed, but more opportunities for you to further your vocal studies are available for you all. Some include internships for different production companies, sitting with other vocal teachers to assist with prospective Waverly students; all exciting things to say you did way before entering your most important year pf your studies; junior year.

Mr. Villanova turns around and begins handing sheet music to the class, getting straight to teaching the new music. Jennifer looks down at the paper and sighs loudly.

Jennifer: *to Milo* Dude, this shit is in a different language.

Milo: You don’t have to know what the words mean, you just have to sing them–

Jennifer: How the hell am I singing words that I don’t even know how to pronounce, yet alone know the meaning of–

Mr. Villanova: *turns around* Ms. Castro, Mr. Kamalani; care to share what you two are discussing? Must be something more important than what the rest of the class is doing.

Milo stops in his tracks once Jennifer speaks up first.

Jennifer: We were talking about how this music is in a different language, so technically we were talking about what the rest of the class is doing.

Mr. Villanova: *raises an eyebrow* Ms. Castro; let us not start the new school year on a bad note…

Jennifer: I’m just answering your question…

Mr. Villanova: *stern* That’s enough, Ms. Castro–

Jennifer: You stopped the whole class to call me out and now you don’t want to admit when you’re wrong?

Milo: *to Jennifer* Pep, please–

Mr. Villanova: Ms. Castro.

Mr. Villanova goes to his desk and writes something on a notepad. He rips the piece of paper from the pad, handing it over to Jennifer. Jennifer looks down at the paper that reads, “Detention Slip”.

Jennifer: Dude, are you being for real right now?

The class reacts to Jennifer’s outbursts and starts chattering among themselves. Mr. Villanova tries to quiet the class down before addressing Jennifer again.

Mr. Villanova: Would you like for that to be two days of detention instead, Ms. Castro?

Jennifer doesn’t respond back, she rolls her eyes and sinks into her seat. Milo looked over at Jennifer, feeling sorry for her getting in trouble of the first day.

…

The bell rang to end the class, and it was now time for dismissal. Jennifer packed her things and quickly left the class, not letting Mr. Villanova have a word with her before dismissing her. Milo stands in the room, still packing his things for the day. Most of the class has already left.

Mr. Villanova: Mr. Kamalani.

Milo turns around, looking at the teacher.

Mr. Villanova: Good job catching on to the music quickly. I know your grade choir lacks other members for a proper baritone section, but there’s never a doubt that you’d carry it well.

Milo: Thank you, Mr. Villanova.

Mr. Villanova: And please, maybe you can get through Ms. Castro better, but please let her know that she is going to be the soloist for this specific song.

Milo nodded his head before leaving the classroom. He walks past a different classroom that is typically held for detention after school. He looks into the classroom, noticing Jennifer sitting at a desk near the back of the room.

He immediately hears a girl’s voice calling out his name from down the hall.

Gwen: Milo!

He turns around and notices it’s Gwen. She tiredly walks toward Milo; he meets her halfway and pulls her in for a hug.

Milo: Gwennie.

Gwen breaks the hug and gives Milo the evil eye. Milo just smiles at her.

Milo: It’s your nickname–

Gwen: ‘Gwen’ is already a nickname for my first name.

Milo: *teases* Gwyneth.

Gwen playfully hits Milo on the arm as he laughs out loud. Gwen shushes him by putting her finger across his lips.

Gwen: There’s still teachers in these classrooms!

Milo: It’s after school, nobody is gonna tell us that–

A teacher looks out of their classroom, noticing the young couple being loud.

Teacher: Excuse me!

Milo and Gwen make a run for it, running towards the double exit doors at the end of the hallway.

…

Milo and Gwen are hanging out in the treehouse located in front of Gwen’s house. The sun is setting and it’s beginning to get late, but the teen couple don’t stop talking to each other.

Milo’s head is laying on top of Gwen’s lap as she played with his hair. He adjusts himself to face her; more so Gwen’s tiny belly. He can’t help but smile.

Gwen: *giggles* What?

Milo: Isn’t it crazy to think that this little bump is going to become a whole person?

Gwen: Well, if you’d listen to the classes in Biology last year…

Milo deadpans has Gwen ruffles his hair.

Milo: I know how it works! I just… never thought about it.

Gwen: This is going to blow your mind even more: this whole person is half you, half me. Can you imagine a person that is a combination of your looks and my brains?

Milo: *sits up* What if he has my brains?

Gwen: It can possibly have your brains and my looks–

Milo: Whoa, whoa; It?

Gwen: *laughs* I’m not going to misgender our baby.

Milo: You’re not; he’s literally right here just–

Gwen: *grabs Milo’s face with the palm of her hands* Milo.

Milo looks into Gwen’s unique, purple-like eyes.

Milo: I hope he has your colored eyes.

Gwen: *laughs* You say the weirdest things.

Milo slowly leans in toward Gwen, kissing her on the lips. Gwen quickly pulls back when she hears her mother calling out her name. Gwen pushes Milo down toward the floor, hoping he is out of view from her mother.

Mrs. Messow: Honey, it’s getting late!

Gwen: I’ll be in soon! Just wrapping up some homework!

Her mother turns back around toward the house, closing the front door behind her. Milo shoots back up, holding the back of his neck.

Milo: Sheesh, I didn’t think I needed a chiropractor at 15.

Gwen: I’m sorry! I didn’t mean you hurt you–

Gwen holds Milo’s neck, gently rubbing the back of it. Milo just watches her do so; his pupils are literal hearts when looking at her.

Milo: You’re gonna be a great mom.

Gwen blushes as she bites her bottom lip, keeping in her growing smile.

Gwen: You think so?

Milo: No doubt. You’re already so nurturing and caring. *long pause, ponders* I wish I had parents like that. Maybe then I wouldn’t feel like such a fuck up.

Gwen: *sternly* You’re not a fuck up.

Milo: *faintly smiles* I’m glad you think I’m not.

Gwen: Well if you think you’re a “fuck up,” then I’m one as well.

Milo: *scrunches eyebrows* You’re not a fuck up–

Gwen: So you see how ridiculous it sounds coming from another person?

Milo raises his eyebrows, realizing the reverse psychology Gwen just did on him.

Gwen: You want to know how I know you’re not one?

Milo looks at her, waiting for an answer.

Gwen: Because you’re still here. You didn’t just…leave me to figure things out on my own. And I see how you look at me nowadays.

Milo: *blushes* You’ve noticed?

Gwen: Well, let me rephrase; I see how you look at this nowadays.

Gwen places a hand over her belly, revealing it’s tiny shape. Milo smiles before looking up at her.

Milo: Hate to break this precious moment but… does your mom know?

Gwen sighs, readjusting herself. Milo gets off of her, seemingly feeling like the lovey dovey portion of their conversation is over.

Gwen: Both of my parents know, and they actually want to formally meet you–

Milo: *shocked* Fuck, they’re gonna hate me–

Gwen: Milo–

Milo: *panics* They’re going to kill me–

Gwen: *claps hands* Hey!

Milo refocuses his attention on Gwen.

Gwen: Everything is going to be fine. They just want to meet you, considering we made this decision to have it.

Milo: *teases* He doesn’t appreciate being called an it.

Gwen playfully slaps Milo on his arm as he laughs.

Milo: But okay. I’ll meet your parents.

Gwen: And I meet yours?

The question takes Milo off-guard.

Milo: Mine?

Gwen: *scoffs* It only makes sense that we formally meet each other’s parents…

Milo: *saves face* Right. Yeah, sure; of course.

Gwen smiles as she kisses Milo gently on the lips. He looks at her afterwards.

Gwen: I’ll AIM you a little later tonight when I get on the computer, okay?

Milo: Of course.

Gwen smiles as she starts gathering her stuff from the treehouse. Gwen starts to climb down before she looks back up, whispering at Milo.

Gwen: Leave in 5 minutes.

Milo: *thumbs up* You got it.

Milo watches Gwen carefully go down the ladder with her things. She looks up and smiles at him before running towards the front door of her house. It is only when Gwen is out of sight that the utter panic flashes on Milo’s face.
