Tape #46: Sleepover Talk.

All of the lights in Jennifer’s room are off, and the sound of cars driving by in the street outside is the only auditable noise. Milo’s eyes are open, looking up at the ceiling, unable to fall asleep. He turns his head towards Jennifer, where he lies on her bed. He notices a dim light reflecting against the wall. He lifts his head towards see that Jennifer isn’t asleep, but is on her cellphone.

Milo: Pep?

Pep’s dark shadow moves on the bed, reacting to the sound of Milo’s voice.

Jennifer: What are you doing up?

Milo: What are you doing up?

Jennifer looks down at her phone, waving it up slightly to show Milo.

Jennifer: Playing ‘Snake’.

Milo: *confused* Playing ‘Snake’?

Jennifer: Yes, playing ‘Snake’–

Milo: Why in the world are you playing ‘snake’–

Jennifer: *annoyed* Because I can’t sleep, obviously!

Milo doesn’t say anything back. Silence fills the room. Jennifer sighs, readjusting on her bed.

Milo: Why can’t you sleep?

Jennifer: I’m just not tired…

Milo: Was spending your whole day after school with Nate not tiring?

Jennifer sits up on her bed, turning on her night lamp on and putting on her glasses. She looks annoyed.

Jennifer: I don’t know; was whatever the hell you were doing not tiring?

Milo rolls his eyes, now sitting up from the sleeping bag. He sighs, seemingly defeated.

Milo: I’m tired of fighting with you, Pep. Like… I’m physically and emotionally tired of constantly feeling like we’re entering a battle.

Jennifer doesn’t say anything back.

Milo: Like, why can’t we go back to when things were simple between us?

Jennifer: When has anything been simple with us?

Both teens look at each other, analyzing the expressions on the other’s face.

Milo: Before everything just got… serious. Before our fights were about who’s taking the last slice of pizza back at the shop after school, or about not picking each other as their dodgeball team member. When did our fights begin to be about other people outside of our friendship?

Jennifer: *mumbles* When life got serious.

Milo sighs and gets up from his sleeping bag to sit on the edge of Jennifer’s bed. They take a brief moment to reflect on things before speaking.

Jennifer: Like, when did our fucking lives get so difficult? I feel like everything is just so complicated now. We have majors that require so much of our time to practice and perform that I can’t even go and be a teenager anymore.

Milo turns his head to look at Jennifer, who’s looking down at her bed.

Jennifer: And like… my mom is really having another baby. She’s really having a baby with the same person that left us behind and no one sees the problem with that.

Milo continues to look at Jennifer and notices her face is damp. She had been silently crying as she spoke. He looks down pondering his own thoughts in his head.

Milo: I know everything feels like it’s changing. We are changing, into the people we are meant to be. But, if we let people dictate the direction we’re heading, we’re going to look back and regret just not doing what we wanted to do when he had the chance.

Jennifer looks at Milo now, wiping her face before she does.

Milo: Even if that means not getting on your case about the guys you choose to date.

Jennifer tightens her lips into a smile, sighing before responding.

Jennifer: I appreciate you always looking out for me. It always comes from a place where you are genuinely concerned for my well being, and not for some hidden agenda. But, I just wish that you had some faith in me. Like, all I want is for you to trust my word.

Milo: I know—

Jennifer: Like I never asked you to protect me from the world; like I need to get into shit so that I can learn and grow from it…

Milo: I know…

Jennifer: And all I want is for my best friend to see that and support me, whether or not you agree with my decision making…

Milo: *slightly irritated* I know, Pep—

Jennifer: No, you don’t, Milo.

Milo and Jennifer are now face-to-face, getting annoyed at each other’s responses.

Milo: You don’t think I know all of this?

Jennifer: You act like you don’t know it.

Milo: You don’t think I’m constantly battling with being your best friend versus being–

Milo stops for a second before he continues to speak. Jennifer looks at him, wondering what was going to be said. Milo looks at her, letting out a sigh before shaking his head.

Milo: I’m sorry. I never meant for it to come off as being judgmental or not being a good best friend. I just want the absolute best for you after everything that has happened in your life. You deserve the absolute best, Pep.

Jennifer doesn’t say anything back. She sits there, looking at Milo. He looks at her back, noticing her hard interior crumbling down. He knows that Jennifer only lets her guard down for the people she trusts entirely. He half smiles at her, hoping to comfort her in some way.

Milo: I will try to listen more, and understand where you’re coming from with things that I may not agree with at first. You’re your own person, and… life is just too short to not be enjoying each day like it’s your last…

Milo stares out into space, Jennifer notices the usual behavior, snapping her hands in front of his face. He shakes his head and snaps back to reality. She laughs once he does.

Jennifer: Dude, we’re only fifteen. Shit is gonna happen and make a day not as great as the others, but I get where you’re coming from.

Milo smiles.

Jennifer: I will try to not be so defensive when you disagree with me. I want to be able to hear you out without immediately feeling like I’m being judged. I guess part of the reason why I react the way I do is because I do value your opinion. Like, I want my best friend to feel proud of me, and cheer me on–

Milo: But of course I would do–

Jennifer: –whenever I feel like no one else does.

The teens look at each other without saying a word.

Jennifer: A part of the reason why we are best friends is because we confine in each other. We both don’t have other people in our lives that we trust with our deepest, darkest secrets.

Milo begins to bite the inner corner of his mouth.

Jennifer: I don’t have anyone else to talk to that wouldn’t judge me–

Milo: You have Nicki though.

Jennifer: Nicki is the one that I exclusively tell girl stuff to, the type of stuff that boys don’t like to hear us talk about.

Milo: *laughs* I get it.

Jennifer: Exactly. But everything else… I can only talk to you about. You understand what it feels like to be misunderstood by your family, to the point that you don’t even feel like you’re a part of it.

Milo ponders the thought, nodding his head to agree.

Jennifer: And I miss having you here as my person.

Milo and Jennifer take a moment to look at one another. Nothing is said, but the two are dangerously close to each other. Milo begins to get nervous; he doesn’t remember ever being this close to Jennifer without her freaking out about personal space. Before he can decide on what to do next, the bedroom door flies open, which causes the teens to quickly move away from each other.

They look toward the door and see a girl’s silhouette in the doorframe. Jennifer sighs loudly once she realizes it’s her sister.

Jennifer: *annoyed* What are you doing in here?!

Maryette: It’s freezing in Matt and Brie’s room, so I need a sweater to wear.

Milo sits and watches the sisters talk to each other, trying to not get in the way.

Jennifer: Whatever; make it quick so I can go back to asleep already.

Maryette rolls her eyes and enters the room and looks in her closet for a sweater. Jennifer and Milo look at each other, speaking in only facial expressions and laughing.

Tape #45: Pep’s Responsibility.

Jennifer and Nate walk down the streets of Brooklyn after a day of hanging out. She’s smiling and laughing as Nate looks at her with his baby face. He’s carrying her book bag on one shoulder with his guitar case on the other.

Jennifer: Are you sure you’re okay? I can carry my own bag—

Nate: I’m fine, I’ve carried a lot more on my shoulder before.

Jennifer: Well, be careful about straining your shoulders; by the year 2025, you’ll be hunched over because you decided in your teens to carry 100 pounds of crap.

Nate: 2025? *laughs* That’s literally 18 years from now; by then I’ll have one of my brother’s kids carry my things! I’ll be too busy holding my walking cane.

Jennifer: *confused* Nate, we’ll only be, like, in our 30s…

Nate: Exactly, we’ll practically be middle-aged!

Jennifer laughs at Nate’s banter, she smiles at him afterwards; he notices right away.

Nate: What?

Jennifer: Nothing, it’s just… *sighs* Thanks for making my day better. I’ve been going through a lot these past couple of weeks, and it was nice to get away from all of that for once.

Nate: You want to talk about it?

Jennifer: To ruin the mood?

Nate: No; to get it off your chest.

Jennifer sighs, contemplating the thought. Nate also notices it.

Nate: I’m not going to force you to do anything that you don’t want to do, but maybe talking about it will help you put some things into perspective.

Jennifer looks at Nate for a moment before ultimately sighing.

Jennifer: I feel like everything is changing in my life, and I don’t like it. Like, yeah; I know all of us are feeling how different high school is from middle school, but I feel like I can’t even adjust to the change properly because everything else in my life decided to change at the same time.

Nate: Like what?

Jennifer: Well, for starters, my mom is dating my dad again after not being in our lives for 11 years. My mom expects me to just go with the flow and accept him just because he’s my dad.

Nate: But you can’t because you feel betrayed by what he did?

Jennifer takes a moment to reflect and think.

Jennifer: Yes. I don’t know anything about him, and he doesn’t know anything about me. It’s just strange that my mom expects me to be happy that he’s back and they’re expecting a baby and—

Nate: *shocked* Oh! They’re having a baby?

Jennifer: Exactly. Like, you’re bringing another baby in this world and yet you haven’t done anything to show us that you even care about the two kids you left a decade ago.

Nate: That sounds like a lot—

Jennifer: *goes on a tangent* And on top of all of that, my band is on hiatus because—

Jennifer stops her train of thought; it alerts Nate as he looks at her.

Nate: Because?

Jennifer: *sighs* Because Milo and I can’t get our shit together.

Jennifer looks down at the sidewalk as the two teens continue to walk. Nate ultimately stops in place, which makes Jennifer lift her head and look up at Nate.

Nate: Can I be honest about something? The more you tell me about Milo, the more I realize how much I really don’t like him.

Jennifer: He’s not a bad person, Nate—

Nate: But he’s a bad friend.

Jennifer: *defensive* You can’t judge a person without ever really knowing them.

Nate: You’re right, but I also know that friends don’t make each other feel like shit at the end of the day. His feelings are not your responsibility, Jennifer. Now your band isn’t together because he isn’t man enough to apologize to you.

Jennifer is taken back my Nate’s response. Half of her wants to defend her best friend, but the other half is questioning if he’s even her best friend anymore.

Jennifer: He’s been too busy hanging out with his new best friend.

Nate: While you’re out here, stressing out about someone that isn’t even thinking about you in this exact moment.

Nate places his hands on Jennifer’s shoulders, now facing each other.

Nate: You gotta stop making yourself small for people that fear to see you do bigger and better things. You’re an amazing singer! If I wasn’t already committed in a band with my brothers, I would’ve totally had you sing lead for my band! You are such a cool person to hang out with, and it sucks to see you shrink yourself when it comes to the people that are supposed to want to see you grow.

When Jennifer doesn’t say anything back, Nate looks directly in her eyes to reassure her. She looks back at him, taking Nate’s words for consideration.

Jennifer: Really?

Nate: Really really.

The two teens giggle as they look at each other. They slowly lean in for their first kiss; Jennifer’s face immediately turns red once they pull away from one another.

Jennifer: *nervous* I, uhm… I—

Nate: *smiles* It’s okay.

They look at each other one last time before Jennifer’s ringtone goes off; a snippet of “SOS” by the Jonas Brothers.

Jennifer: Shit; that’s my mom looking for me—I have to go.

Nate: No worries, AIM me when you get settled in.

Nate kisses Jennifer’s cheek before smiling and walking away. Jennifer feels like she’s on cloud nine… until she walks up the steps of her house and opens the door.

Jennifer enters the house, leaving her book bag on the ground next to the doorway. Immediately after, Lydia comes into the living room area with Justin following after her.

Lydia: Jennifer Ann Castro! Where the hell have you been?

Jennifer: *confused* I was hanging out with my friends—

Lydia: Don’t lie to me, Pep.

Jennifer: *defensive* I was! My friends are in their own band and I went to hang out with them at their rehearsal—

Lydia: If that was true, then where is Milo?

Jennifer scrunches her eyebrows, not expecting that to be the follow up question.

Jennifer: What?

Lydia: For Christ’s sake; I told you before his parents left that you both come back here together after school in order to let him in.

Jennifer: Yeah, that was if no one was going to be home, and clearly, someone was—

Lydia: Nobody was home when I got in an hour ago, Pep, and I’ve been trying to reach you since then—

Jennifer: *annoyed* Milo is not my responsibility! He’s his own person and knows better—

Lydia: He is your responsibility when you both are due home together after school!

Justin steps in between the mother and daughter, trying to keep the peace.

Justin: *to Lydia* Lyd, take it easy—

He turns around to look at Jennifer.

Justin: Your mom is just worried that Milo isn’t with you—

Jennifer: Yeah well instead of yelling at me, why don’t she yell at Milo for not checking with me today!

Both the parents turn around to look at Jennifer.

Justin: You weren’t hanging out with him after school?

Jennifer: *to Justin* I know sticking around to hear the whole story isn’t your thing, but like I said before: I was hanging out with my other friends—

Lydia: Jennifer!

Justin: *turns around* Babe, it’s fine—

Jennifer makes the gagging noise overhearing her parents speak to each other. Justin turns around to face Jennifer.

Justin: Just found out where he is, Pep—

Jennifer: Wow! You really don’t listen to a word I say, huh? Didn’t I say to never call me that ever again?!

Justin: *slightly annoyed* This is a serious matter—

Jennifer: But respecting my wishes isn’t consider a serious matter?

Lydia: Jennifer, please—

Justin: I’m just trying to figure out where Milo is, Jennifer—

Jennifer: Sure; care about everyone else besides the ones that should really matter—

In the gist of the argument, a knock is heard from the front door. Justin walks over to the door and opens it. There stands Milo.

Lydia: Milo Kamalani!

Milo straightens himself out, looking nervous at the adults.

Milo: I’m so sorry—

Jennifer: Dude, where the hell were you?!

Milo: *annoyed* Waiting for you after school to drop my things off here, but you—

Jennifer’s eyes widen as she looks at Milo, signaling him to shut up. Milo stops speaking and looks at Jennifer’s parents.

Milo: When I didn’t find Pep at school, I just went back to my house to wait until she AIMed me, asking me where I was…

Both adults take a sigh of relief, particularly Lydia. She takes a seat on the sofa, in which Justin walks over to check on her.

Lydia: Milo, you need to understand that we have a curfew few in our house. This curfew applies to both you and Pep, and I expect both of you to follow instructions regarding about coming home after school.

The teens don’t say anything in response. The adults begin to walk out of the living room area. Both Milo and Jennifer stand there for a quick moment; Jennifer is the first one to begin walking out the room.

Before she leaves, she looks at Milo with a peculiar look on her face.

Jennifer: You weren’t wearing that sweater in school today.

Milo: Like I said, I had to wait at my house for you to come back here.

Jennifer rolled her eyes and walked away from Milo. She doesn’t look back to see if he was following her until she reaches the top of the stairs towards her bedroom. To her surprise, he wasn’t.

y2katalogue: The Tapes

Tape #44: Once in a Lifetime Moment.

The light in Milo’s room turns on, and the two teens stand in the doorway. Milo walks in, putting his bookbag on the ground. Gwen nervously observes the room; Milo notices as he turns around to face her.

Milo: You can come in.

Gwen nervously walks in, looking around the room to find a space to sit. Milo clears off a spot on his bed nervously.

Milo: Sorry; I didn’t get the chance to clean up my room…

Gwen: *giggles* It’s okay, Milo. *looks around* You have an… interesting room.

Milo sits on his computer chair, facing Gwen.

Milo: It’s just a regular room.

Gwen looks at the posters on the wall noticing a lot of timeless musicians.

Gwen: Big Bob Dylan fan, huh?

Milo: He just has a certain style I hope to embody as an artist.

Gwen looks at Milo, intrigued.

Gwen: Were you always into music?

Milo: *nods head* For as long as I could remember. My parents tried putting me into all these different after school programs; sports, music, science stuff… anything that kept me busy.

Gwen: Kept you busy?

Milo: My parents were, and still are, never home. They work for a company that requires them to constantly travel, or just work crazy hours. So, they would just throw me in random programs to see which ones I liked and ran with it.

Gwen’s face falls, looking worried. Milo notices and changes his composure.

Milo: I mean, it helped me realize that I really like music, and because of that I’m a dual major at Waverly, so–

Gwen: Not by choice though.

Milo sighs, silently agreeing with Gwen.

Milo: Sure, there’s tons of things I wish I could’ve done as a kid, but if it wasn’t for music, I wouldn’t have met my friends, or have this band…

Milo doesn’t believe in the words he’s saying, considering the circumstances he’s currently in with both his friend group and his band. He fidgets with his hands; Gwen is now the one that notices.

Gwen: We wouldn’t be in the same band class if you never got into music, so I’m glad that you found your passion in music.

Milo smiles, sighing in relief. Gwen shifts on his bed, causing an avalanche of clothes to fall to the ground. Milo quickly gets up from his chair and begins to pick them up.

Gwen: *panics* I am so sorry!

Milo: It’s okay; they needed to be picked up and put away anyway.

Milo walks away with a pile of clothes towards his dresser. Gwen notices a couple of ruffled papers on the ground. She picks them up and notices Milo’s handwriting under a couple of music notes on sheet music. She realizes it sounds like they are lyrics to a song.

Gwen: Are these lyrics to a new song?

Milo: *dismissive* It was probably something I was working on before the band decided to randomly go on hiatus or something…

Gwen begins to read the lyrics. She looks at Milo before looking back down at the paper.

Gwen: *reads* There’s something beautiful in the way her blonde hair reflects off the sun, angelic like a halo…

Milo quickly turns around and runs towards Gwen, trying to grab the paper from her hands. She’s too quick for him, getting up and holding the piece of paper away from Milo.

Gwen: *continues reading* Her eyes; purple like the night sky on a winter’s night after it snows, maybe it shows, that she embodies beauty even in through the darkest times–

Milo: Gwen!

Milo chases Gwen around his room to get the paper, Gwen laughs as she runs away. He eventually tackles her down on the ground.

Gwen: *laughs* Milo!

Milo: You weren’t suppose to–

Gwen: Is this about me?

Milo looks at Gwen for a moment before getting up from the floor, taking the picture. Gwen sits up, staying on the ground looking at Milo.

Milo: It’s nothing.

Gwen: Blonde hair? Purple eyes?

Milo turns around to look at Gwen. Her face is soft, looking at him in a non-judgmental way. She faintly smiles at him, as if letting him know it was okay to be honest with her.

Gwen: Read it to me.

Milo: What?

Gwen: Read it to me in the way you want the piece to be read.

Milo takes a moment before letting out a deep breath. Gwen gets up from the ground, grabbing Milo’s hand as she sits on his bed. Milo sits next to her and looks down at the paper.

Milo: Don’t laugh.

Gwen: I promise.

Milo takes one final look at Gwen before looking down at the paper.

Milo: *reads* There’s something beautiful in the way her blonde hair reflects off of the sun; Angelic like a halo, it’s the way that she glows without even trying. Her eyes; purple like the night sky on a winter’s night after it snows, maybe it shows, that she embodies beauty even in through the darkest times. I don’t remember the last time I felt this at ease, how her presence brings me peace; so darling, please don’t leave…

Milo takes a moment to look up at Gwen, who is intently staring at him as he reads.

Milo: You’ve made life feel so easy, so pinky promise me that we’ll stay like this; you and me, sitting in the west wing making music together… but, who needs instruments when her laugh is the sweetest sound… there’s no one like her around.

Milo looks at Gwen once he’s finished. Gwen doesn’t say anything right away, which makes Milo nervous.

Milo: It sucks, I know–

Gwen: Absolutely not. That was beautiful, Milo. I… never had a song written about me before. No one has ever written such beautiful words… about me.

Milo smiles and lets out a sigh of relief after Gwen’s comment.

Milo: I mean… you are a beautiful person.

Gwen face gets red, blushing at Milo’s words. It makes Milo feel good.

Milo: I started writing it after visiting your treehouse for the first time. I still think about that day all the time.

Gwen: Can I be honest about something?

Milo nods his head.

Gwen: Hanging out in the treehouse doesn’t feel the same without you there. I… think about you a lot when I’m there.

Milo listens and smirks, his face beginning to turn red. He places his hand on top of hers, letting the butterflies in his stomach.

Gwen: *nervous* I… never felt this way before.

Milo: Like what?

Gwen: Seen.

Gwen looks up from her hands, now directly at Milo.

Gwen: In the little time we’ve been friends, it’s like… I can finally put my guard down with someone and feel… safe. I didn’t realize that until we kissed at Battery Park. I thought it was going to be super awkward and weird, but it felt so natural. Liking you feels so natural.

Without even hesitating, Milo cups Gwen’s face with his hands and kisses her. The kiss is much deeper than the ones they shared back at the park. The kiss begins to turn into making out, getting closer to each other as they do so.

Milo leans forward towards Gwen; her head lands on top of his pillow on the bed. The teenagers are grabbing at each other as they kiss. Milo runs his hands through Gwen’s hair, caressing her body close to his as they kiss. It startles Gwen a bit, breaking up the kiss to look up at Milo.

Gwen: Milo.

Milo looks down at her, stopping what he’s doing to listen.

Gwen: I… uhm… do you want this?

Milo takes a moment to sit with Gwen’s question. His body is hot, giddy looking at Gwen on his bed. He never had a girl this close to him that felt the same way he does, and he never thought that Gwen would be the girl that he would share this moment with. But… he knew. He always knew, since the moment he saw Gwen that she was the one.

Milo: I have never been more sure about something in my life, of course after knowing the fact of just how beautiful you are.

Gwen smiles and pulls Milo down towards her, kissing him. The teens begin to undress each other as they kiss, taking in this once in a lifetime moment.

y2katalogue: The Tapes

Tape #43: “Say It Like You’ll Never See Me Again.”

Gwen and Milo walk to the pier in Battery Park, looking out at the water where the sun is currently setting. The orange color of the sun is reflecting on the water, looking over the Hudson River. Milo looks over at Gwen, looking out toward the water in awe.

Gwen: The water looks like a painting; how is this even real?

Milo: Have you never seen the sunset here before?

Gwen: *shakes head* I don’t really… go out and explore. I never seem to have the time to do something spontaneous for the day.

Gwen looks at Milo.

Gwen: This is the most spontaneous thing I’ve done, so I’m glad that I’m doing it with you.

Milo blushes. He looks out at the water before he says anything to Gwen.

Milo: Sometimes, it’s better to just do what you want to do, and not what you have to do.

Gwen: *teases* Is that your way of talking yourself out of doing homework?

Milo side eyes Gwen playfully as she laughs.

Milo: What I mean is school and band aren’t our complete lives, and I even have to say that about the band with my friends. It’s okay to want to do something else with some meaning.

Gwen: *confused* Meaning?

Milo: Like coming to the park to watch the sunset. Going to the pizza shop and getting that slice of pizza you were craving all day at school. Going to the movies and sneaking into rated R movies because you want to see the latest scary movie. Hanging out with your friends because it feels like you never get the chance to, because our busy lives get in the way, and—

Gwen: You enjoy their company.

Milo takes a moment to look at Gwen, nodding his head at Gwen’s response.

Gwen: The most important thing is that whatever you do with your time, you enjoy it.

Milo’s mind begins racing; it shows in the way he fidgets with his fingers.

Milo: Do you wish you had more time?

Gwen turns her head to Milo and scrunches her eyebrows. Milo’s face turns red, realizing just how inappropriate that came off.

Milo: *panics* I mean, like– I didn’t mean it like–

Gwen: I know.

Nothing is said for a moment. Both teens look away from each other, now seeming awkward.

Gwen: But to answer your question: yes. I do wish I had more time.

Milo turns his head to face Gwen, waiting for her to continue speaking.

Gwen: I’m glad that I have all these things keeping me busy, because it feels like I am making something out of the time I have. But I do wish that I had time to do things like this. Things that you remember years from now because they were special and… different.

Milo: And you will remember them years from now, and you’re going to have so many more moments like today.

Gwen smiles before sighing. Milo is sad that she doesn’t agree with him.

Gwen: Millions of people have cancer, Milo. Some people are living their last night alive tonight, while I’m here… breathing, walking, and living. I know one day I’ll be one of those people in a hospital bed, living my last night, knowing I’m not waking up the next day–

Milo: *stern* Gwen–

Gwen: *continues* And… I’ll accept it once that day comes.

Milo takes in the weight of Gwen’s words before responding. He can’t stop looking at her as he does. It begins to make her feel uncomfortable.

Gwen: What?

Milo: Nothing. It’s just… you’re seriously one of the strongest people I know.

Gwen: *scoffs* More like pessimistic…

Milo: *serious* I mean it, Gwen.

Gwen looks at Milo, noticing his eyebrows scrunched inwards, and his mouth is tight.

Milo: Sure, there are tons of people in this world who are going through what you’re going through, and possibly even worse. But people our age will take their hardships and think the world owes them something just because they think no one else has it as bad as they do. Someone our age will literally think it’s the end of the world because their divorced parents decided to get back together again, and think that the people around them should pity them just because it’s something that they assume to be the worst thing to happen to them. But you’re the total opposite. You’re literally the sweetest and kindest girl I have ever met, and you’re literally fighting for your life every single day. That makes you so fucking strong!

Gwen giggles at Milo’s enthusiasm; it eases Milo.

Gwen: *laughs* Okay, okay, Mr. Inspirational.

Milo smiles at Gwen’s soft giggle; his eyes are locked onto her. She notices, but doesn’t look away from Milo.

Gwen: Thank you.

Milo: I’m just speaking the truth–

Gwen: No, I mean… thank you for being so thoughtful and so kind. You’re… like no one I’ve ever met before.

Milo: I feel the same way.

Without any hesitation, both Gwen and Milo keep their eyes on each other, slowly moving their heads closer to each other. Their noses are practically touching before they both stop in their place. Their eyes move from each other’s lips to each other’s eyes.

Milo: *nervous* I… uhm…

Gwen: Say it.

Milo is caught off-guard as he looks at Gwen.

Milo: Huh?

Gwen: Say it like you’ll never see me again, Milo.

Milo takes a moment to look at Gwen. His skin feels numb, his nerves jumping in excitement. He singlehandedly never felt this feeling before. Before he can overthink things, he leans into Gwen, gently kissing her on the lips. Gwen accepts it, closing her eyes in the process.

Their lips gently separate after the kiss, and the two teens look at each other once it’s done. Nothing is immediately said.

Milo: *nervous* I… like you. Like… like-you like you. Like– like–

Gwen giggles as she holds Milos cheeks with her hands, leaning in to kiss him again. This time, the kiss is deeper than the first one. Milo is undoubtedly on cloud nine.

y2katalogue: The Tapes

Tape #42: Consequences for Your Actions.

Milo paces back and forth near the bus stop, sighing as he looks down at his cellphone. He sees various classmates walk out of the school; some in which he knows are in Jennifer’s 8th period class. He grows frustrated the longer he waits.

He immediately notices Nicki walking out of the school with Danny; he rolls his eyes as he walks away from the bus stop, knowing Nicki should know where Jennifer is.

Milo: Yo, Nic!

Nicki turns around and sees Milo. He walks over to her; she seems annoyed as she crosses her arms along her chest.

Nicki: If you’re here to talk shit about Pep, then–

Milo: *confused* Huh? No, I’m trying to find her.

Nicki’s face softens.

Nicki: She didn’t show up to 8th period?

Milo: I don’t know, but a bunch of her classmates in her 8th period class were already dismissed.

Nicki turns her head to the exit door, noticing the group of teens from that class hang out outside.

Milo: So, I’m guessing you don’t know where she is either…

Nicki: *sighs* The last time I saw her was at lunch, even though she did seem like she was in some sort of rush…

Milo sighs, growing more frustrated.

Milo: Perfect. I’m suppose to be staying with her and her family this week, and I have all my shit with me to bring to her place, and she’s nowhere to be found.

Nicki: I’m guessing she’s also not answering her messages on AIM either, huh?

Milo doesn’t answer; he continues to look around the area around the school until he notices someone else leaving the school. His face softens.

Milo: *sighs* I’m just gonna hang around until she answers me; if anything, I’ll just crash at my own place waiting for her.

Nicki sighs as she says goodbye to Milo for the day. They walk away from the school in different directions, but Milo is walking around the school, to meet up with Gwen.

Milo gets closer to where Gwen is standing; she finally notices him and waves.

Gwen: Hey, Milo; I thought you’d be half way home by now.

Milo: Yeah, about that…

Milo sighs; Gwen looks at him worried. He immediately notices the shift in her expression.

Milo: It’s nothing bad or anything, it’s just that my parents are out of town, which means I have to stay with Pep’s family for the time being, and she’s nowhere to be found.

Gwen: *annoyed* Oh.

Milo: Yeah… and Nicki hasn’t heard from her either, so–

Gwen: Nate wasn’t in 8th period today.

Milo and Gwen look at each other; nothing is said, but a mutual agreement is had.

Milo: Another day, another guy keeping her back.

Milo looks back at Gwen; she seems uncomfortable standing there. Milo sighs before he forces a smile.

Milo: She’s not my responsibility. *to Gwen* I was actually looking for you.

Gwen: Me? Why?

Milo: Well, since I have no way getting home, I was wondering if you wanted to hang out. Of course, if you don’t have your practices to go to.

Gwen: *teases* So, a rebound hang out?

Milo gets flustered as Gwen giggles.

Gwen: I’m totally joking. Of course we can hang out.

Milo smiles at Gwen and starts to walk away from the school.

Milo and Gwen continue walking down the streets of Manhattan before they finally get to Central Park. They walk until they find a vacant beach in the middle of the path, sitting down and placing down their bags next to them.

Gwen: Going on this walk wasn’t the greatest idea considering we have our instruments today.

Milo: Thankfully it’s violins and not, like a huge cello.

Gwen nods to agree. Milo clears his throat and looks around the area.

Milo: It’s so nice out here, it’s about time that we got some sunny days this month.

Gwen: Do you usually come to the park when it’s nice like this?

Milo: *shakes head* I’m usually stuck in some sort of practice.

Milo fidgets with his hands; Gwen takes note.

Gwen: Is everything okay?

Milo looks up and forces a smile.

Milo: Yeah.

Gwen: You’re such a horrible liar.

Milo scoffs before sighing; he’s surprised at how observant Gwen truly is.

Milo: I think the band is breaking up.

Gwen: *shocked* What? What happened?

Milo: Pep and I got into this huge fight at last week’s rehearsal, and both Nicki and Danny walked out… well, Nicki walked out, Danny followed behind her.

Gwen: What did Nicki say?

Milo: She’s just tired of Pep and I always fighting about something. I don’t blame her though; I’d be fed up if I was constantly in the middle between two best friends–

Gwen: *protective* You keep throwing around the fact that you two are best friends, but Milo I have to be honest with you; you guys seem like you are far from being that.

Milo: *defensive* It’s complicated, Gwen–

Gwen: It shouldn’t be.

Milo takes a moment to look at Gwen, trying to understand what Gwen was truly trying to say.

Gwen: I don’t mean to cross your boundaries, but it upsets me that you and her throw around this “best friend” word and you guys are constantly fighting–

Milo scrunches his eyebrows, confused.

Milo: “Her?”

Gwen: *annoyed* Yeah, in the girls’ bathroom, she made sure I understood that she was your best friend.

Milo grows annoyed at the revelation.

Gwen: *crosses arms* She’s made it very clear that she doesn’t like me.

Milo: You haven’t done anything to make her not like you though.

Gwen: I think she just doesn’t like the fact that you hang out with other people outside of your circle.

Milo: *annoyed* She hangs out with people outside of our circle all the time–

Gwen: I’m not telling you who you should hang out with or not, but if I’m being completely honest with you; she’s not your best friend. Why should you continue to act like you guys are best friends, when you’re not even allowed to do half of the things she does? It’s not right.

Milo sighs, taking Gwen’s words into consideration. He looks at Gwen one more time; she seems concerned rather than jealous or upset.

Milo: Let’s forget about Pep. Let’s forget about the band, school; everything that isn’t serving us purpose right now.

Gwen’s face softens up once she sees Milo smile at her. She sighs, looking out at the park, noticing the sun was beginning to set. Milo still looks at her.

Milo: Thanks.

Gwen: *turns around* For what?

Milo: For showing me what a best friend really looks like.

Gwen is taken back by Milo‘s statement. Milo smiles at Gwen, reassuring her thoughts. She smiles back.

Gwen: I just… really care about you. You’re not like any other person I know, so it hurts me when someone takes advantage of that.

Milo: *confused* Of what?

Gwen: Of your heart. You have such a big heart, and you care about the people you love so deeply, you sometimes don’t see that people can take that for granted. People think they have all this time in the world to get themselves together, like time is something that is granted for us.

Milo: I mean, we’re only 15, Gwen–

Gwen turns her head to face Milo, now serious. Milo instantly regrets what he said, knowing what Gwen meant by her response.

Gwen: I have to think this way, or else my life would’ve been meaningless. I accepted the fact that there’s going to be a lot of things I won’t get to experience, but that doesn’t mean that I live each and every day not doing the things I want to do, or say things without thinking there aren’t consequences behind them.

She looks at Milo as she speaks.

Gwen: Just know that I see how big your heart is, and I appreciate that you decided to go along with it and… even become my best friend.

Milo is now the one taken back by Gwen’s words. He starts feeling butterflies in his stomach when he’s with her. Milo gets up from the bench, gathering his bags. Gwen looks at him, confused.

Gwen: Are you leaving?

Milo: We’re going to Battery Park.

Gwen: *confused* For what?

Milo grabs Gwen’s hand, helping her up from the bench. He looks in her eyes, noticing how violet the color is in her eyes.

Milo: To see the sunset.

Milo continues to hold Gwen’s hand, power walking out of the park to go to the train station. Gwen doesn’t hesitate; she lets Milo lead the way.

Tape #41: Meeting Adjourned in the Girls’ Room.

The door to the girl’s bathroom swings open, and Jennifer immediately sees Nicki talking to another girl in front of the mirrors. Nicki notices Jennifer and immediately stops talking. The other girl turns around to look at Jennifer, and then leaves the bathroom after saying goodbye to Nicki. Once the door closes, Jennifer walks up to Nicki.

Jennifer: Since when are you friendly with Stella?

Nicki: *dismissive* She’s in my band class.

Jennifer: Seems like everyone is in your band class…

Nicki: *faces Jennifer* What is that suppose to mean?

Jennifer: I don’t know, the fact that Milo’s new best friend was introduced to him because of you kind of bothers me; him lashing out on me because of Nate didn’t make you walk out of our band rehearsal but as soon as I mention Gwen, now you’re quitting.

Nicki turns the faucet off and turns her body toward Jennifer, giving her her undivided attention.

Nicki: No, it was just my last straw between you two. Seriously Pep, I am so tired of hearing you and Milo go back and forth because you two refuse to talk things out like actual friends and leaving me in the middle of it all.

Jennifer: *defensive* So me securing a rehearsal space for our band wasn’t enough for you to understand that the way Milo was reacting was uncalled for?

Nicki: I’m not saying I’m siding with Milo, I’m saying that you two are either friends, or you’re not.

Nicki walks away to grab paper towels to dry her hands; Jennifer walks in front of her to keep her from avoiding the conversation.

Jennifer: Did he tell you we weren’t friends anymore?

Nicki: *annoyed* No, Pep; but considering you two fight over the dumbest things really questions whether or not you two should stay friends. I mean honestly; when was the last time we all even went to the pizza shop after school and hung out? When was the last time you had anything to say about Milo that wasn’t you venting about a fight you had?

Jennifer: *defensive* Milo is always too busy to just casually hang out after school anymore, hence why we only ever see him in band rehearsals that he does nothing but complain at—

Nicki: Then talk to him if that bothers you, y’know, something that I do whenever you and Milo go off on each other for no real reason.

Nicki walked away from Jennifer and exited the bathroom, leaving Jennifer standing there by herself. As she began to walk out of the bathroom, she bumps into Gwen, entering the bathroom.

Gwen: Oh! S-sorry…

Gwen kept her head down, walking past Jennifer. Jennifer turns back around, changing her mind.

Jennifer: No worries, Gwen… you just seem to always insert yourself in the wrong places…

Gwen scrunched her eyebrows as she looked at Jennifer, not appreciating her side comment. Jennifer rolls her eyes as she washes her hands.

Jennifer: By the way, if you so happen to see Milo today—which I know your probably will— tell him that his best friend was looking for him.

Gwen: *mumbles* Best friend…

Jennifer hears Gwen and turns back around.

Jennifer: Yeah, his best friend.

Gwen doesn’t say anything back; she looks at Jennifer as she speaks.

Jennifer: Thanks for relaying the message.

Jennifer continues to walk out of the bathroom has the bell rings Gwen looks back before she exits the girls’ bathroom as well.

Jennifer walks into her bedroom and notices her sister, Maryette, lying on her side of the room. She rolls her eyes as she sits at her desk, turning on her computer.

Maryette: Mom said she’s waiting for an important call and that we can’t use the computer.

Jennifer: Whatever.

Maryette: It’s true! She’s supposed to get an important call from the doctor and—

Jennifer: I don’t care; shut up already—

Maryette: I’m telling mom!

Jennifer: Don’t you have anything better to do than to be in my business?!

Maryette: You’re not allowed to be on the computer!

The girls start arguing with each other until their mother comes into the room to investigate what is going on.

Lydia: Hey, hey! What is going on in here?

Maryette: Pep is using the coomputer after you said that we couldn’t go on it and she isn’t listening and is—

Lydia: Mars, why don’t you go downstairs with Aunt Gabby and get some ice cream with her and Matt?

Maryette: *sighs* Fine.

Maryette walks out of the room; Lydia closes the door behind her and sits on the edges of the bed, facing Jennifer.

Lydia: Is everything okay, Peppie?

Jennifer: I’m fine.

Lydia: Well, as you know; Milo is going to be staying with us for the week while his parents are away on a business trip.

Jennifer: *annoyed* Don’t they have other people that can watch him while they’re away? Why does it always have to be us?

Lydia: Because you two have been best friends since you were kids? Are you and Milo fighting?

Jennifer: I don’t want to talk about it.

Lydia: Okay… well, Milo is coming over after school tomorrow, so whatever you two are going through, please try to put it behind you or the time being.

Lydia gets up from the bed and walks towards the bedroom door.

Lydia: *turns around to face Jennifer* I am waiting for a call, so if you can wait a few before logging onto the computer, it would be greatly appreciated.

Jennifer huffs and crosses her arms as her mother leaves the room. He looks into her book bag and takes out her Sidekick, flipping it open to check her messages. She sees a message from Nate on AIM.

GuitarNate92: hey jennifer; wanna stop by the rehearsal space after school tomorrow?

Jennifer smiles and begins to write back.

XxChilliPepxX: sure! I’ll meet u after school near the vocal room 🙂

Jennifer sends the message and smiles, excited to spend more time with Nate,

y2katalogue: The Tapes

Tape #40: The Feeling of Unexpected Happiness.

Milo is seen walking into Biology, clearly not in the greatest mood. He walks over to his desk without saying a word to any of his classmates, takes out his books, and leans his head on his arm against the desk. Gwen watches as he does, sensing that something is wrong.

Gwen: *softly* Hey, Milo.

Milo: *looks up* Hey.

Gwen: Are you okay?

Milo sighs, as he leans on the back of his chair.

Milo: It’s been a rough week.

Gwen: *sympathetic* You want to talk about it?

Milo: I’m thankful that you let me vent, but you’re probably tired of me venting about the same issues over and over again.

The teacher walks into the class and lets the class know that the lecture will begin shortly. The two teens turn their heads back to face each other.

Gwen: *whispers* I don’t mind, if that’s what you’re worried about. This is what friends do for each other.

Milo looks at Gwen; the word “friend” rings in his ear. He hasn’t really thought much about Gwen being one of his friends. He smiles hearing Gwen say it though. She notices him smiling.

Gwen: What?

Milo: Are you busy today after school?

Gwen: *shakes her head* Fridays are my days off from my extracurricular activities. Why?

Milo: *teases* I mean, what else do friends do after school on a Friday afternoon? *waits a moment* Hang out.

Gwen rolled her eyes and laughed. Milo smiled in return.

Gwen: I would love to hang out after school. *light bulb goes off* Oh! We can hang out in the treehouse!

Milo: *confused* The treehouse? Is that some sort of exclusive club or something?

Gwen: *laughs* No, it’s literally just a treehouse. Meet me after school today near the bus stop going towards uptown.

Milo smiles at Gwen, appreciating her support. The teacher quiets the class down and begins the biology lesson for the day.

Milo and Gwen are walking in a suburban neighborhood; completely different than his own. He looks around the houses, noticing just how big they are. Milo is taken back by the nice area he and Gwen are walking in.

Shortly after, the teens stop at a house in the middle of the street. A huge tree sits in the front yard; Milo notices the white treehouse within the tree. He finally puts two-and-two together.

Milo: Oh, you literally meant a treehouse!

Gwen laughs as she starts walking towards the ladder attached to the tree trunk. Milo watches her climb up before pushing open a panel to enter. She pops her head out for the opening, looking down at Milo who is still standing on the ground.

Gwen: Come!

Milo nervously starts climbing the ladder, not knowing what to expect once he gets to the top. Shortly after, Milo crawls in from the panel and sits on the floor of the treehouse. He observes the things that live in the treehouse: a tiny bookshelf with magazines and books, some pillows against the corner of the treehouse, and some Christmas lights that wrap around the ceiling. He takes everything in awe.

Milo: *looks around* This is so dope.

Milo looks at the books on the bookshelf; he notices the title of one of the books.

Milo: To Kill A Mockingbird. We’re reading this in our English class.

Gwen: *nods* It’s one of my favorites. I keep most of my favorite books up here to reread.

Milo: Reread? You mean you already finished it?

Gwen: I read it in middle school in my ELA honors class. That same year, I asked my mom if she could buy me the book for my own collection for my 13th birthday.

Milo is shocked to have learned that Gwen already read the book the rest of their grade was currently reading in school. Gwen pulls out other books from her shelf; some in which are thicker than any book Milo has read before.

Milo: Where do you even find the time to read all these books with your busy schedule?

Gwen: I don’t really read in my free time anymore, but I used to read a lot when I was in and out of treatments at the hospital.

Milo looks up at Gwen, knowing exactly what she was talking about.

Gwen: I didn’t do much of my extracurricular activities in the beginning, and I wasn’t in school that much because of the treatments and constant appointments. I read books in my free time; in a way, it sometimes felt better to live in the world of these different characters than my own, especially on the days where I felt the weakest.

Milo listens as Gwen continues to speak, taking in her story that he appreciates her telling him about. Trusting him with.

Milo: Was the treehouse always here?

Gwen: My dad built it when I was in elementary school, but I was too afraid of heights for the first year. Eventually, it started to fall apart and my parents were thinking about taking it down completely, but after I came home from the hospital after my first treatment, he rebuilt it for me. That summer, it became my favorite place to read, and then later practice violin in.

Milo: I bet this was a popular hangout spot for you and your fiends when it was first built—

Gwen: I never had anyone else up here before. *looks at Milo* You’re the first.

Milo looks at Gwen, taking back by the revelation. She smiles at him before putting her books back on the shelf. Milo watches her do so.

Milo: My dad wouldn’t ever done something like this for me. He never had anyone else interest in knowing the things I was passionate about.

Gwen turns her head to look at Milo.

Gwen: Surely he had to, otherwise you wouldn’t be in such a prestigious program like Waverly’s.

Milo: My dad was never nice to me. He always acted like everything I liked or did was wrong in his eyes. Anything that went against his own wishes meant going against him.

Gwen stays silent, not knowing what to say next. Milo sighs.

Milo: I always felt like something was wrong with me too. Like, why wouldn’t my own dad sacrifice some of his duties to come and support my activities? At least my mom tries to make them, even though her and my dad are business partners and work in the same company. They aren’t around a lot of the time, which means I’m usually the oddball out in Pep’s family.

Gwen: You stay with them when your parents are away?

Milo nods.

Milo: Yesterday, Pep threw the fact about my dad to my face in front of band practice after disagreeing with her about something she was doing. I guess it just made me feel shitty afterwards knowing my own best friend would stoop so low and throw it in my face; that my dad couldn’t care less about me.

As Milo sighs and takes a deep breath, Gwen places her hand on top of his for reassurance.

Gwen: I’m sorry that you went through that. It’s not cool for her to expose your story like that after trusting her with it. But even if you are hurt by her words or it’s now making you think worse of yourself, remember that you are not the horrible things people tell you out of anger.

Milo: But what if it is true? What if the things you judge yourself for are the same things someone says out loud about you?

Gwen: It’s not true. Now, I don’t know why things were said to you or what kind of things you tell yourself, but I can tell you that you are not those horrible things. You are extremely talented and passionate. You are smart about things that most of us are not smart about. You are driven to do bigger and better things, all while still trying to figure yourself out. Most importantly, you are trustworthy, caring, and a great friend.

Gwen looks at Milo before continuing.

Gwen: I… never really had a friend like you before.

Milo: *smiles* Same here.

The two teens look at each other intently, sharing a connection. They slowly leaned into each other and gently kiss each other for on the lips. The kiss only breaks up once a woman’s voice is heard calling out Gwen’s name.

Gwen: Fuck—

Milo is taken back but the sequence of events; first kissing Gwen, hearing Gwen cuss for the first time, and then Gwen forcefully pushing his head and body down toward the floor of the treehouse, hiding him from the woman outside.

Gwen: *pokes head out of window* Yes, mom?

Gwen’s mom: Dinner will be ready in about 10 minutes; it’s time to come in for the day and wash up.

Gwen: Coming!

Gwen’s mom walks back into the house; Gwen lets out a sigh of relief and helps Milo get up from the ground.

Gwen: *turns red* I… am so sorry about that, I didn’t mean to crush you like that!

Milo started laughing, which made Gwen started laughing along too; easing the shock of what just happened between them not too long ago.

y2katalogue: The Tapes

Tape #39: The One Where Band Practice Was *Super* Awkward.

Milo, Jennifer, and the rest of the band enter the rehearsal space. The teens look around, observing their surroundings before setting their bags down. Milo walks over to the music stands to begin setting up for band practice.

Nicki: This is such a huge space! *to Jennifer* Does Nate and his brothers host rehearsals for the New York Philharmonic or something?

Jennifer laughs as she rolls her eyes.

Jennifer: Dude, this is going to be the space where stardom is born; I can feel it!

Milo rolls his eyes as he continued to set up. He takes one of the microphone stands from the storage closet and brings it to the center.

Nicki: Thanks for helping us get the rehearsal space! I feel like this space is going to inspire us to put on even a bigger and better performance.

Milo: *annoyed* Alright, the space isn’t that great.

Nicki looks at Jennifer; Jennifer rolls her eyes as she started to get her things together for the practice. Nicki looks at Danny, sharing a confused look on their faces.

Milo: Alright, we’re going to start off the practice with “Once Again”.

Milo looks around the space for a microphone.

Milo: We need a microphone; where do they keep the microphones?

Jennifer: I don’t know, he—

Milo: We need microphones in order to practice; why wouldn’t he have the mics out already—

Jennifer: *annoyed* Take a chill pill; I’ll go ask somebody if they can help us get the microphones—

Milo: *mumbles* So unprofessional.

Jennifer turns around and looks at Milo. She shakes her head and leaves the rehearsal room. Nicki is now annoyed at Milo.

Nicki: Cool it, Milo.

Milo: *dismissive* Whatever.

Shortly after, Jennifer comes back into the space; this time she is accompanied by Nate. Milo is fuming in his place.

Jennifer: *talking to Nate* So, yeah; we were looking to see where you kept the mics for rehearsals?

Nate greets everyone in the space; Milo is the only one that doesn’t greet him back.

Nate: Uhm, yeah; they should be in the tech closet that Milo is near.

The teens look at the closet next to Milo. Milo turns the knob of the closet door and opens it without any issues.

Jennifer: Ugh, you’re a lifesaver, Nate! Thanks again for letting us rehearse in here today.

Nate: No problem! I’m here if you guys need anything else. *looks at Jennifer* you know where to find me.

Nate walks out of the rehearsal space as everyone said their ‘goodbyes’; of course, Milo doesn’t say anything.

Milo: Alright, let’s finally rehearse that number after killing half of our rehearsal time looking for these dumb mics.

Jennifer rolls her eyes and walks to her position next to the microphone stand. There’s clearly tension in the space between Milo and Jennifer. Danny doesn’t intervene, but the tension continues to bother Nicki throughout the practice.

Milo begins to count down the rest of the band to start the song, Nicki, Danny, and Milo begin playing their instruments. Jennifer stands there, not really feeling the lyrics of the song. Milo watches Jennifer sing the song without any passion behind the words, ultimately halting the rehearsal process.

Milo: Stop, stop, stop. *to Jennifer* Yo Pep, you’re good?

Jennifer: Great, actually. I don’t think the lyrics to this song are any good.

Nicki and Danny watch the two teens go off on each other. Nicki especially knows the severely of Jennifer’s comment.

Milo: Oh really?

Jennifer: Yes, really. Like what is even “I woke up today, I woke up wide awake” even mean? Isn’t that a bit repetitive?

Milo: *annoyed* It’s a song, not a friggin’ ELA essay; it’s not suppose to make sense—

Jennifer: It should still make some sort of sense if we’re trying to portray an image to our audience. *goes on a tangent* The other day, I was hanging out with Nate while he was writing lyrics for a song and I was able to visibly see the image through the words that he was writing.

Milo: *annoyed* Well maybe then you should be the lead singer in his band instead of ours… Oh, wait; they already have a lead singer and it’s not you.

Jennifer: *defensive* Maybe you should get tutoring from Nate to write— oh, wait; you’re not in AP English with Nate for him to even help you.

Milo: If you don’t want to be in this band, then why are you even here?

Jennifer: If you didn’t want me to be in this band, then why did you ask for my hep to find us a space to rehearse?

Milo: You were the one that didn’t want to do them in your garage because your dad is around now and you hate his guts—

Nicki: *scolds* Milo!

Jennifer: *to Nicki* Don’t even bother, let him speak his mind! *to Milo* Your parents have a whole basement we can use but your dad is always complaining how his son is talentless and wasting his place playing in some stupid band!

Nicki: Pep!

Milo: *to Nicki* Nah, it’s fine! Let her talk! Let her try to explain her plan when this guy breaks her heart like the 15 other guys she’s crushed on in the past and come back to me crying as if I haven’t warned her for the first 14 times that these guys want nothing but a girl who comes off as being easy!

Jennifer: Like Gwen, right?

Milo is taken back by Jennifer’s comment since it came out of nowhere. Nicki is now furious and begins to pack up her things. Jennifer and Milo both look at Nicki as she does.

Nicki: I quit.

Jennifer: What do you mean you quit?

Nicki: I mean I quit! I am not going to be a part of this band where you guys do nothing but yell at each other an come for each other’s heads when I’m working my ass off getting us these gigs in the first place! You guys can figure out a bassist for this show, because I refuse to keep being in the middle of you two and your stupid arguments!

Milo: Nicki, you don’t mean that—

Nicki: Watch me.

Nicki storms out of the rehearsal space as Milo and Jennifer watch. Danny begins to pack his things up too.

Jennifer: *to Danny* You’re not staying either?

Danny takes a moment before he answers Jennifer’s question.

Danny: With all due respect, I think you guys have to figure out your issues before all of us can come together as a band. I’m here to play some music and do something fun with Nicki and you guys, but if Nicki’s backing out of the band, then I am too.

Jennifer: Dude, are you serious?

Danny nodded his head as he walked out of the rehearsal space as well. Jennifer and Milo stand in the space, feeling awkward. Milo shook his head as he started to get his things together. Before he leaves he space, he hands Jennifer a twenty dollar bill, paying for the rented space.

Milo: Tell Nate we’re not gonna be needing the space for practice anymore.

Milo walks out of the rehearsal room; his mind is racing at 100 miles per hour, thinking about everything that was said today.

Milo: *confused* Why would she even mention Gwen?

Milo flipped open his Sidekick and immediately went on AIM to see if Nicki was still logged in. She wasn’t. He took a deep breath and sees an unread message from Gwen from an half an hour ago.

GwennyPenny: I hope band practice is going well, rockstar! XD

Milo smiled at the message and then immediately signs, not answering the instant message.

y2katalogue: The Tapes

Tape #38: Besties Breaking Free (From Each Other)

Milo walks into his Biology class and smiles once he sees Gwen sitting at his table. He immediately takes the seat across from her , which makes Gwen look up from her notebook.

Gwen: *smiles* Hey, Milo.

Milo: *points at her notebook* Writing the scientific formula to cure world hunger?

Gwen: *laughs* What does one have to do with the other?

Milo: I don’t know, doesn’t the earth eat due to photosynthesis or something?

Gwen ponders on the thought, amused.

Gwen: That somehow made sense, but you clearly need more tutoring if you’re looking to be in Chemistry with me next year.

Milo raises an eyebrow and smiles as Gwen giggles.

Milo: Oh I will, only if the smartest girl the world is the one tutoring me.

Gwen: *sarcastic* You have Marilyn vos Savant as a tutor? I’m totally jealous.

Milo laughs at Gwen’s joke, feeling amused by her intelligence-related humor.

Milo: That’s a good one; and something that we are learning in our history class.

Gwen: It’s literally freshman social studies, Milo.

Milo: So what? It;s still something that I was able to remember from being in that boring class.

Gwen smiles and rolls her eyes, continues to write in her notebook. Milo watches her as she does.

Milo: Do you ever read back on your class notes?

Gwen: *confused* Why wouldn’t I?

Milo: I mean, you simply just know everything, even without the teacher actually teaching it to us first.

Gwen: I always read back on my notes; that’s how I learn the information. *teases* You should try it sometime.

Milo sucks his teeth as Gwen laughs; he doesn’t take her words too seriously.

Gwen: Enough about me; you and your band have practice later today?

Milo: *shocked* How did you know I had band practice today?

Gwen: Because it’s Wednesday, and you tell me your band always has practice on Wednesdays, of course with the exception of school performances or something else.

Milo smiles at Gwen as she speaks. He’s still pretty shocked that Gwen remembers the things that he would’ve deemed as miscellaneous information.

Gwen: *nervous* What? Is my hair okay?

Milo: *snaps out of it* Yeah no, your hair is fine. I was just thinking about something else is all.

The bell rings, and the teacher begins to teach the class. While Gwen is focused in on what’s being taught, Milo finds himself looking at Gwen every now and then, smiling whenever she would raise her hand and answer a question correctly.

Jennifer is seen opening her locker door during passing, getting the textbooks needed for the next class. She drops something on the floor as she opens it, realizing that she must have overstuffed her locker from the previous period.

Jennifer: *annoyed* Ugh, son of a—

As she bend down to pick it, up, she is startled when she sees Nate appear out of nowhere.

Jennifer: —Nate! Geez! A warning would’ve been nice.

Nate: *teases* But it’s more fun to be a bit spontaneous.

Jennifer cocks an eyebrow and begins to walk down the hall; Nate walks with her.

Nate: Listen, I wanted to talk about what happened at the studio the other night…

Jennifer continues to walk with her head down, listening to Nate as he speaks.

Nate: I didn’t mean to judge you the way I did about your past relationship.

Jennifer stops in place, finally turning to Nate.

Jennifer: I’m listening.

Nate: *sighs* I’m sorry for the way that I acted. The truth is that it bothered me that my brothers knew about you and Danny before you told me, but then I realized that I have no right in being mad at you for not telling me something. It’s not like you’re my girlfriend or something.

Jennifer seems slightly disappointed, but acts cordial.

Jennifer: Yeah.

Nate: And I really hope you still would like for me to come to your band’s show in a couple of weeks to see what you guys have been working on, if that’s okay with you.

Jennifer ponders the thought and sighs. She faintly puts on a smile, hiding her true feelings.

Jennifer: Of course; that’s what friends do.

Nate leans in to give Jennifer a hug, in which she quickly reciprocates one back to Nate. In the sidelines of the hallway, Milo catches them in the act. He rolls his eyes and walks in the opposite direction.

Milo: And she was all over him!

Milo and Nicki sit in the hallway, waiting for Jennifer to be dismissed from class.

Nicki: From the sound of it, it looks like it was just a simple, friendly hug.

Milo: *annoyed* Oh, so you’re just going to sit there and pretend Pep isn’t crushing on Nate?

Nicki: And even if she was, what does that have to do with you? I understand your dislike for Danny; but you barely even know Nate besides him being a dual major like you.

Milo: I don’t trust any guy that calls himself a musician just to impress girls—

Nicki: … you do understand that you are also a musician, right?

Milo: Yeah, but I don’t use it to get girls to talk to me.

Nicki cooks up an eyebrow, crossing her arms along her chest.

Nicki: Yeah? So your “friendship” with Gwen is just a friendship?

Milo is flustered at the question.

Milo: Yes, Nic. I’m not out here trying to hook up with every pretty girl in our grade—

Nicki: *shocked* You think Gwen is pretty?!

Milo: *nervous* I mean, she’s okay—

Nicki: Milo, you’ve never called a girl that you didn’t like ‘pretty’ before. Plus, I didn’t think Gwen was your type—

Milo: *defensive* She’s not, but I’m a guy; of course I’m going to think girls are pretty.

Nicki lets the conversation go once she sees Jennifer walk out of the vocal room. Milo is relieved: perfect timing.

Jennifer: Hey, Nic! *looks at Milo* Milo.

Milo: Pep.

Tape #37: An Odd Confinement.

Milo sits alone in his usual booth in the pizza parlor, flipping through his binder of sheet music and a pencil in hand. He scribbles and erases on different parts of it, concentrating hard on his task. He’s taken back when he looks up momentarily and sees Gwen walk in, immediately spotting him.

Gwen: Hey.

Milo: Hey.

Gwen: *looks around* I’m shocked to see you here by yourself.

Milo: *scoffs* I’m not.

Milo sighs and continues to work in his binder. Gwen awkwardly stands there, watching Milo. Milo looks up, realizing Gwen is there.

Milo: You can sit with me if you’d like.

Gwen doesn’t say anything; she sits down in the booth with Milo, looking at his binder as he continues working.

Gwen: It seems like you’re really into what you’re working on. Is that for class?

Milo: *shakes his head* For the band… I don’t even know why I’m still working on this anyway, to be honest.

Gwen: Is it something that needs to get done?

Milo: *annoyed* Yeah, and only I give a shit about it whereas my bandmates just get to do whatever they want to do in their free time.

Milo notices his aggression when Gwen winces at his words.

Milo: Sorry. It was a rough day.

Gwen: I know… it’s why I came here in the first place; to check on you to see if you were okay.

Milo looks up at Gwen, surprised she would even do something like that for him.

Milo: You saw what happened today in lunch?

Gwen nods her head; Milo sighs.

Milo: Sorry you had to see that… Pep– I mean, Jennifer–

Gwen: I know that’s “Pep” to you.

Milo pauses before continuing.

Milo: Yeah. Pep can be a handful at times.

Gwen’s facial expression agrees with Milo, which makes Milo immediately retract his words.

Milo: I mean, she’s my best friend and her decisions are sometimes questionable–

Gwen: You mean you tell her you don’t like something she is doing and she ignores you?

Milo: *defensive* It’s not as simple as that.

Gwen nods, awkwardly looking toward the front window before she speaks.

Gwen: I don’t know Jennifer well, but from what you’ve told me about her and just seeing you guys argue in the lunchroom today, I can see how complicated your friendship can be with her.

Milo: *sighs* Pep always means well, but she has such a thick-skull and thinks she knows everything and goes into shit without thinking twice.

Milo leans forward, seeming more comfortable talking to Gwen about this.

Milo: I mean, if you were a part of a band, would you have gone to some random guy’s private studio to check it out, alone, not even knowing that his older brothers were there too?

Gwen: I mean, I would’ve felt comfortable if my bandmates went with me to check the space out in my opinion–

Milo: That’s what I’m saying! You know Nate Tobias, right?

Gwen: *recalls* Percussion guy with the curly hair in band?

Milo nods his head.

Milo: Apparently his brothers own this private studio and Pep went to check it out the day our ensemble had that performance. Like, she barely knows this guy but feels so comfortable agreeing to go see this studio space and gets mad at me when I call her out on her shit.

Gwen: And that’s what you guys were arguing about in the lunchroom today?

Milo: *nods* Pep is my best friend, but she makes being in a band with her really fucking difficult, especially when she feels like it’s her band just because she’s the face of the group. It was her idea to make Danny Campbell our drummer.

Gwen: *confused* Are you not friends with him?

Milo: Danny is Pep’s ex, and–

Before Milo continues, he’s hesitant about sharing personal information about Jennifer.

Milo: Let’s just say that he was a douchebag, and she just forgave him and then thought it was a brilliant idea to introduce Nicki to him and vote him into our band.

Gwen doesn’t say anything, she sits there and listens.

Milo: She’s my best friend, but I just wished she actually realized that her impulse decision-making affects the people around her.

Gwen: Have you thought about sitting down with her and actually telling her how you feel?

Milo: It’s literally hopeless. She thinks that everything that bothers me stems from jealousy or *air quotes* Me being a hater.

Gwen: *sighs* Milo, I say this as your friend, but you need to realize that you can’t control what Jennifer does. Those are her decisions to make, and thinking that you can persuade her into making decisions that you want her to make is just going to strain your friendship with her.

Milo: I’m not trying to control her–

Gwen: No, but you want her to make decisions that you want her to make.

Gwen smiles and leans forward toward the table.

Gwen: I’m not saying you can’t care for your friends; I know you care about them dearly, but people like Jennifer don’t want to change, and you have to be okay with that.

Milo: *annoyed* I’m not trying to change Pep–

Gwen: You’re trying to prevent her from changing, Milo.

Milo doesn’t say anything, he just sits there and looks at Gwen.

Gwen: I had a friend a lot like Jennifer back in junior high school. She was outspoken and social, but she always appreciated our friendship and found time for us to hang out. But, boys came into the picture, and she became this boy-crazed girl who forgot about her friends.

Gwen adjusts herself in her seat, visibly looking uncomfortable with the topic.

Gwen: Anyway, our hangouts went from every day to every other day, to barely once a week. We began growing apart and that was hard since that’s when I was first diagnosed with this.

Gwen points at her head, referring to her cancer diagnosis.

Gwen: The boy that she was crushing on had a crush on me. I didn’t believe he did, but I saw whenever I was with this friend, he was only interested in talking to me. That made her jealous, which led her to start bullying me.

Milo raises his eyebrows, not knowing this about Gwen. She sighed as she continues.

Gwen: It was horrific. She was my best friend, so her insults weren’t just your typical, generic ones. She cut deep and even took it upon herself to take my wig off one day when this boy came to talk to me. Shouted to the entire class about my diagnosis. It was humiliating.

Milo: I’m sorry you went through that. What happened after that?

Gwen: I was homeschooled for my 8th grade year.

Milo: *surprised* Wait, you didn’t go to another school?

Gwen shakes her head no. Milo is shocked.

Milo: So, you didn’t have, like, a senior trip or go to senior prom?

Gwen looks at Milo; he already knows the answer to his questions. Milo doesn’t say anything else until Gwen starts to talk again.

Gwen: I learned early on that if your friends change, there’s nothing you can do to prevent it. You can’t expect them to still be the version of themselves you know them as, and the more you try to change them back, the more hurt you get in the end.

Milo: Do you know where that girl is now, or–

Gwen nods her head and slightly smiles.

Gwen: The boy too. They date now and go to Waverly.

Milo: *eyes widen* Wait, what?! They go to our school?!

Gwen: *nods* I know you know Greg Stein from band–

Milo: Greg?!

Gwen reacts to Milo’s reaction to hearing Greg’s name.

Gwen: Yeah.

Milo: *in shock* If you’re talking about Greg, that means the girl you’re talking about is–

Gwen tightens her smile straight, sighing afterward.

Gwen: Diana Lopez.

Milo: *dumbfounded* Greg and Diana went to Beverly Junior High; they literally made me and Pep’s a living hell our senior year– *moment of realization* That means you also went to Beverly. What did you major in?

Gwen: Band. I was literally in the same band class as you.

Milo is taken back by the newfound information.

Milo: But, I would’ve known you, I would’ve–

Gwen: It’s fine, Milo. My point is that I tried so hard to change my friends back to what I knew them before, and it literally made me vow to not really make close friends like that ever again.

Milo: I mean, you’re friends with Nicki.

Gwen: She’s more of a bandmate than a friend. *smiles* I don’t spend recess gossiping with her in the schoolyard.

Gwen looks down at her hands, clearly in thought. Milo watches her before he catches her attention.

Milo: Well, people are missing out being your friend, because you’ve been a really good one to me.

Gwen looks up and smiles, appreciating Milo’s words.

Milo: And if I wasn’t so caught up in whatever it was back in Beverly, I would’ve definitely been your friend back then too.

Gwen: *smiles* Same here.

The two teens share a moment of silence until Gwen’s phone rings for a notification. She looks down at her phone, sighing before putting it back in her pocket.

Gwen: I have to go; my mom is waiting for me at the doctor’s office.

Milo: Is she okay?

Gwen: *corrects* It’s my appointment.

Milo gets the hint, nodding his head in understanding. Gwen gets up from the booth, gathers her bookbag and things, and begins to say her goodbyes.

Gwen: I’ll see you in school tomorrow–

Before Gwen walks away, Milo calls out for her.

Milo: Hey.

Gwen turns around.

Milo: Thanks for letting me confine in you.

Gwen smiles.

Gwen: That’s what friends are for.

Gwen turns back around and walks out of the pizza parlor. Milo watches her walk away from the place through the window. He clearly is now deep in thought about her.
